There are five Level process leading to 2012 International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO)

Levels

The IJSO program will follow the following 5 levels:

  • Level I: Quiz and/or written Examination at School Level.
  • Level II: Quiz and/or Written Examination at the State/Zonal Level,
  • Level III: IJSO National Final Camp,
  • Level IV: Intensive Training Camp for IJSO,
  • Level V: Participation at the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO).

Level I will be organized by The School Coordinator. However CGS will supply the required competition materials for download by schools to administer to the students and the results should be forwarded to CGS.

Level II will be organized by the State/Zonal Coordinator. CGS will equally supply the competition materials which will be administered to the students and the results will be submitted to CGS. All the remaining levels are organized by the CGS.

The detailed information about eligibility and structure of the Levels is given below:

Level I: School Level Examination

This is the first Level of selection of students in the IJSO Programme. School Level is organized by the school coordinator. Every student aspiring to go through successive Levels of the programme must enroll for IJSO 2012. Only schools can register for the 2012 IJSO. The Registration packages are described here.

Eligibility: All Nigerian students who are born on or after January 1, 1997 and, in addition, are in SS2 or lower as of October 4, 2011, are eligible to appear in IJSO-2012. If they qualify in the School Level, they will be eligible for subsequent Levels leading to participation in International Junior Science Olympiad 2012. The number of students to qualify to the next level depends on the registration package a school subscribes to.

It is the student's responsibility to ensure that the eligibility criteria are satisfied. In case at any Level of the program it is found that the student does not satisfy the eligibility criteria, he/she may be disqualified from the program.

This is only a broad guideline, and there is no detailed syllabus given for IJSO.

Question Paper:

IJSO emphasize comprehension of the subject, not rote memory.

Level II: State/Zonal Level

Based on performance in School Level and based on the IJSO Registration Package subscribed to, 1 to 5 students from each school will qualify for the State/Zonal final.

All students who qualify to appear for State/Zonal final will get a certificate of merit from CGS. The decision to have either state or Zonal finals will be taken after the successful competition of the Registration exercise.

Level III: IJSO National Final Camp

IJSO National Final Camp will hold at our Temporary Training Centre on Mambilla Plateau in Taraba State.

Eligibility: Students selected from Level II examination are eligible to appear for IJSO National Final Camp. In addition those students who have been exempted as described in the Enrolment page are also eligible to appear for IJSO National Boot Camp. Besides these two ways, there is no other way by which a student becomes eligible to appear for IJSO National Boot Camp.

The tentative date and time of IJSO National Final is From February 14 – 20, 2012 examination is as follows:

The date and schedule will be announced in the first week of January 2011 on CGS website and communicated by post to the eligible students.

Syllabus: The IJSO syllabus is, however, only a broad guideline. Questions and problems in National finals are usually non-conventional and of high difficulty level, comparable to International Olympiads.

On the basis of performance in INJSO, the top 12 students in the merit list are selected for Level IV: IJSO Boot Camp.

In the event, there is a tie at the last position; all students with the same marks at this last position will qualify for IJSO Boot Camp.

There is no other criterion or provision for selection to the IJSO Boot Camp.

Level IV: IJSO Boot Camp

IJSO Boot Camp will be organized by CGS sometime in August to September 2012 for 5 – 6 weeks. The precise dates will be announced prior to or along with the announcement of the selection list for the IJSO BOOT CAMP.

Eligibility for IJSO BOOT CAMP: Only the students selected from the merit list of IJSO National Final Camp will be eligible for IJSO Boot Camp. There will be no other criterion or provision.

The camp will include several theoretical and experimental tests. Orientation will be provided to students especially in experiments. The camp will conclude with a valedictory function where distinguished scientists will be invited to speak to the students.

The merit list of IJSO Boot Camp is prepared on the basis of the combined theoretical and experimental score aggregated over all the tests in the camp, with 60% weightage for theory and 40% weightage for experiment. Performance in previous Levels is not considered for the merit list and awards of the IJSO Boot Camp.

The top 6 in the IJSO Boot Camp merit list are declared to be special merit awardees. These special merit awardees are given Cash Prices in the form of books and cash. In addition, there are special prizes to recognize meritorious performance in theory and experiments.

The 6 special merit awardees in Junior Science selected at the end of the IJSO Boot Camp constitute the 6 member student team for the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) 2011, provided they satisfy required criteria such as age limit, holding valid Nigerian passport, medical fitness, parental consent, etc.

Level V: Final Training Camp for IJSO 2012

The selected 6 member student team undergoes a rigorous training programme at CGS in theory and experiment. Special laboratories are being developed at CGS for the purpose of experimental training. Resource persons from CGS and different institutions across the country will train the students.

Participation in International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) 2012

The 6 member student team and 3 teacher leaders constitute the delegation to represent Nigeria at the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) 2012.
